9 p.m. The house is full and one room has no signal. One bar in the back bedroom, the gate camera offline since late afternoon, the movie stopping every two minutes. Nothing is broken. The modem is blinking quietly in the living room: the connection you pay for simply does not reach the places where you actually live.

In the Caribbean, that is not bad luck. Houses here are built to hold: concrete blocks, reinforced ring beams, metal shutters, sometimes two floors, sometimes a courtyard in the middle. That is what protects your family through a hurricane. It is also what stops Wi-Fi before the second bedroom.

Your walls protect the family. They do not protect your connection.

Wi-Fi crosses a light partition without effort. It crosses thirty centimetres of block, a reinforced concrete beam, a metal door or the wall hiding the electrical panel very badly indeed. Signal drops the moment you change rooms, it holds on the patio and dies in the kitchen.

Then add what the house is doing at the same time: air conditioning being controlled, cameras, streaming, phones, laptops. All of it talks in the same place, and one modem alone against a concrete wall cannot win.

Two networks inside one house

The first mistake is putting everything on the same network. Your cameras transmit all day and all night, whether anyone is watching or not. They do not need the same thing as children doing homework or someone working from home.

In a house with a rental unit attached, splitting them changes everything: one network for security, one for daily life, and a guest access you cut with one tap the day the rental ends. That is not another gadget, it is organisation. Answering the gate from abroad, as in someone rings the gate, depends entirely on that network.

The cable, the invisible part that decides everything

A network that holds up is not built on access points everywhere, it is built on cabling. Wi-Fi then becomes what it should always have been: a service for phones, not the backbone of the house.

Along the way, Hikvision managed network switches do quiet, very concrete work: a single cable carries both data and power to a camera, and the installer manages the whole system remotely through Hik-Central, with the network topology displayed on screen. And where a cable cannot go, a gate a hundred metres away, the far end of the property, a second home you open three weeks a year, the Hikvision AOV SolarVu series was built for exactly that: powered 100% by solar energy, wireless transmission, no trench to dig. What the house sends without being asked

A camera does not only send an image when something happens: it generates continuous stream, and that stream is what saturates a connection. Hikvision addressed this with Guanlan Encoding, AI-assisted video encoding that cuts the storage and bandwidth required by 30 to 50% on average, while keeping high definition on what actually matters, a person, a vehicle. A camera dropping offline at the wrong moment is the scenario we described in 2:14 a.m., a shadow walks the garden wall.

For comfort the same logic applies: well-placed access points, a mesh network instead of a lonely repeater at the end of the corridor, and the TP-Link network solutions Nexus Carib distributes in the Caribbean.

A network is never visible. You only notice the day it is missing.

The right voltage, in the right place

On Dutch Sint Maarten and on English-speaking islands such as Anguilla, Antigua or Barbados, wiring is 110-120 V / 60 Hz. On the French side of Saint-Martin and on the French islands (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Barthélemy), it is 220-230 V / 50 Hz. Hubs and power supplies must be ordered in the right version, and that is checked before installation, not after.

One more detail people forget: where all of it lives. In many houses the box ends up in the utility room, next to the cistern pump and the electrical panel, in a closed space where the afternoon heat never leaves. Equipment that cooks will not last as long as equipment in a ventilated spot. And when the grid goes down, as we told in three days without power, anything that is not on a battery goes down with it.

A network is designed before the paint goes on

The right time to think about network is while the walls are still open, or the day you stop moving the modem from room to room. A few conduits in the right places, a discreet patch cabinet, an access point where the house turns its back on the living room: it is invisible, and it changes everything.
